Independence In Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nationalized about 36,000 primary schools in the country in 1973. Prior to that, all the primary schools in the country were run under private management. And this started a new era of primary education in the newly independent Bangladesh. Following this, Bangabandhu's daughter Janonetri Sheikh Hasina nationalized about 26,000 private primary schools in the country in 2013. Education is the backbone of the nation and primary education is the foundation of all education. From that realization, the government is implementing various activities through the Primary Education Development Program-3 (PEDP-3) of about Tk. 56,000 crore, attaching utmost importance to the primary education sector. At present all the children of the country are being provided free new books for free on the first day of the school year. Pre-primary classes have been introduced in every primary school by creating new posts of teachers. As a result, it has been possible to reduce the dropout rate by ensuring the admission of 100% suitable children for primary school admission.

As a result of the growing number of students, new buildings are being constructed and expanded in the primary schools of the country. In order to enhance the status of primary school teachers, the rank of head teachers has already been increased from 3rd class to 2nd class and the salary of assistant teachers has been increased. At the end of the primary education cycle, all the 5th class children of the country are participating in the final examination together and in one question like the national examination. Elementary Education Final Examination has been introduced since 2009; This has led to major changes in primary education. Scholarships are awarded to children through final examinations and certificates are awarded to children.

The Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament and Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament are being organized every year to make the primary school children interested in sports including body building.

Modern computer labs have been set up in PTIs for training of primary school teachers and new PTIs have been introduced in 12 non-PTI districts. Work has already started to upgrade primary education up to eighth standard. Laptops and multimedia projectors with internet connection are being provided in the primary schools with the aim of imparting education in a modern way to the primary school children from the very beginning of their education. It is hoped that this will enable our children to be educated in modern and technology based education and develop themselves in a competitive world.

Under the Department of Primary Education, there are Deputy Director's Offices in 8 divisions, District Primary Education Offices in 64 districts, 6 PTIs (Primary Teachers Training Institute) for long term training of teachers, 505 Upazilas / Thana Education Offices and 482 Upazilas for short term training of teachers. There is a police station resource center. Power has been decentralized in the field to facilitate the financial and administrative activities of primary school teachers and primary education officials.
